A “Ujjaylo Birgunj Abhiyaan” has been organized to identify the metropolis as a model city in the country. The Birgunj Metropolitan City (BMC) is all set to install at least 16,000 street lights at roads in the metropolis. For which a fifth wire will be extended and automatic switching system will be connected to each poll by agreement with the Nepal Electricity Authority.
The light installation will start as soon as possible and is expected to be completed in next two years, said Birgunj Metropolitan City Mayor Mr.Vijay Kumar Sarawagi.
“A total of 16,000 street lights have been demanded for all wards. It will cost Rs 240 million (24 Crore) for the project,” said Sarawagi. Half of this money has been funded by Birgunj Metropolitan City and rest of by the Government of Nepal. The light installation will facilitate people’s movement at night and is expected to minimise road accidents and robberies .
The cost of the scheme has been approved by the federal government , he added .
