Kathmandu: The government has signaled to take action against the media for giving provocative expressions and priority to such expressions on social media.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday to announce the decision of the cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Parbat Gurung said that preparations were underway to issue Directives on Social Media 2077, soon to prevent distortion in various media such as Facebook, YouTube and online portals.”
Warning Nepali society not to engage in activities that push it towards anarchy, distortion and anomaly, and mass media workers not to become chaotic, unreasonable and irresponsible, he said, “directives are being issued to bring such activities under the purview of the law.”
He also said that the directives are being brought to regulate the freedom of expression, provocation, person-centeredness, misrepresentation of the highest organs of the country and individuals and such expressions being published and broadcast by social media and some responsible media with priority in the last few days.
“It is unfortunate that the hard earned democratic system of governance established by the long political conflict has been attacked, violence is being spread and the country is being pushed towards confrontation,” he said.
